I worked at Champlain College—you may have heard of it!—as a Gaming Industry Coordinator. It’s a position that didn’t exist for very long, necessitated by Champlain College’s growing involvement with the many game studios and publishers around Montreal. To have an entire role devoted to managing the college’s relationships with the game industry shows just how ingrained the college is with gaming across the city.
My work was varied and diverse: managing alumni creations, updating the college’s contacts, reaching out to studios for visits, internship opportunities, and play-testing sessions, and revamping the Montreal Game Studio’s image—whether that be creating the website, taking pictures for marketing, or crafting an entire marketing video for the studio. My name is Ryan Murphy, I am 20 years old and currently a Production Assistant Intern at Rogue Factor. Throughout my life, I have had 3 jobs, including the position that I am currently at with Rogue Factor. I plan to briefly talk about those positions but mainly focus on my current job at Rogue Factor. Lastly, I am going to talk about what I have learned throughout my experience at Rogue Factor.
The first job that I ever worked at was as a teachers assistant at a camp for 3-5-year-olds called Camp Ellie. It was run by a company called Stepping Stones Museum for Children, I worked there from June 2017 to August 2017. At first, I assisted at the museum and helped set up all of the packets filled with worksheets that were used at Camp Ellie. Then started work at Camp Ellie at the end of June, while there I was in a classroom with three others. One was the lead teacher, and the other two people were also teachers assistants. During the Fall 2018 semester, Chris interned at Casa Rara, a game development studio in Montreal.
During my time studying abroad in Montreal, I interned at a small game development studio called Casa Rara. This amazingly weird place is where I learned so much about my major, game production management, and what it really means to be a producer in the real world. The studio started October 4, 2016, with an official start date of January 16, 2017. Casa Rara is made up of veterans from the gaming industry such as our creative director who worked on Papa and Yo, as well as our programmer who worked on Roller Coaster Tycoon World. During my time in Montreal, I worked as a Production Intern at Back to the Game. The company was founded by Richard Rispoli, an industry veteran who worked at EA Interactive and Ubisoft during his 15+ years working as a producer and project lead. I learned a lot about managing a team of 8-10 people, organizing schedules and keeping the project running smoothly via Trello, and how to organize and prioritize multiple clients for a service-based product.Continue reading →

One of the biggest worries I had when choosing to study abroad in Montreal was if I could find an internship that would work for me. When I first came to Champlain College I knew I wanted to study abroad and learning that I could have an internship abroad only made it that much better. When it came time to apply I was a bit torn between Montreal and Dublin. I was really excited about the possibility of interning in a large city such as Montreal. However, I was nervous about being a business student trying to mix my marketing major with my interest in the video game industry. With a little bit of faith, I decided to apply for an internship in Montreal and am beyond happy with the result.

My name is Austin Roorda, and this semester in Montreal I was a Project Management Intern working at Behaviour Interactive. Behaviour Interactive is an independent game development studio based in Montreal, although it’s roots are actually Quebec City, where it was founded as Multimedia Interactive in 1992.
Since 1992, the company has worked on over 150 titles, many of which belong to AAA IP’s and have sold millions and millions of copies. Some of the titles that it has worked on include winners of several ‘Game of the Year’ awards with their work on titles such as Fallout Shelter. During my time studying abroad in Montreal I worked at Minority Media Inc. as a
Management and Marketing Intern. It’s a relatively small studio that continued to shrink during my time there. Our studio is a single flat with two office spaces and a meeting room connected to the center room, and the over all floor is shared with another software development agency and a publishing studio. So as one could imagine, Minority Media isn’t a very large crowd but its collective unit has got over fifty years of experience working in all aspects of their collective industry. The core business team remains together as their projects evolve, but the development team seems to change with key members working for a few years and then moving to another place in the industry. Minority Media was formed eight years ago by Vander Caballero and Julien Barnoin. They quickly became recognized in the VR development sector for their commercial success with Papa & Yo. During the Fall 2018 Semester, two of our students interned at Ludiq, located at theGameplay Space here in Montreal.
Throughout the semester I have been a Prototype Developer Intern at Ludiq located at the Gameplay Space in Montreal, CA. As a company Ludiq consists of three main staff members Lazlo the founder and head of the company, Hassan in charge of marketing, and Andy an additional programmer. Ludiq began as a tool creation group for the Unity3D Asset Store, their first product named Chronos Time Control was a Unity asset tool that allowed developers to easily control time within their projects. After the products success, Lazlo then began working on the companies next big product named Bolt. Bolt is a visual scripting plugin and has been widely successful within the asset store as a primary go-to for developers that want to quickly prototype or code using widgets similar to the Unreal Engine.
