During my time studying abroad in Montreal I worked at Minority Media Inc. as a
Management and Marketing Intern. It’s a relatively small studio that continued to shrink during my time there. Our studio is a single flat with two office spaces and a meeting room connected to the center room, and the over all floor is shared with another software development agency and a publishing studio. So as one could imagine, Minority Media isn’t a very large crowd but its collective unit has got over fifty years of experience working in all aspects of their collective industry. The core business team remains together as their projects evolve, but the development team seems to change with key members working for a few years and then moving to another place in the industry. Through it all has been Stella, the maleficent office dog
Minority Media was formed eight years ago by Vander Caballero and Julien Barnoin.

Nick Oprisu (Game Production ’19) tells us about his internship at Illogika during his semester abroad in Montreal.
There is a good deal of discussion and debate about what a game “producer” does. Is it mainly business tasks like budgeting and marketing, or is it more project management role? Is it an equal mix of both, or is it something else? This uncertainty is partially why I was drawn to this type of work. Self determination and independence are traits I value highly in people and companies, and the chance to forge my own mark on this new profession is a welcome opportunity. While we can debate the role of them, producers are key to managing even small teams and making sure a game goes from an idea to a product, and a successful one at that. The successful producers figure out this balance fast and adapt their style and work methodology to the team they have. This tightrope walk of managing the product and managing the business is what separates the bad producers from the good ones, and understanding when their current model is failing separates the good from the great. This summer, James Keats (EGPR ’18) stayed in Montreal to do an internship at Behaviour Interactive after studying at the Champlain Abroad campus in the spring.
Having a full time summer internship in Montreal was an awesome experience, and very different from living and working there during a school semester (especially during the winter semester)! I was blown away by how much the city opens up and how truly alive everything becomes when the weather gets warmer. I was lucky enough to be staying during Montreal’s 375th anniversary, and so there were even more events!
